When to seek emergency medical care
Call 911 or seek emergency medical care for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading facial or neck swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or serious facial trauma.
Dental concerns that need prompt attention
- Severe, persistent, or worsening tooth pain
- Swollen gums, facial swelling, drainage, or a possible abscess
- A cracked or broken tooth, or a lost filling or crown
- Pain when biting or sensitivity that lingers
- A knocked-out or displaced permanent tooth
- An injury to the teeth, gums, or jaw
What to expect at your visit
We ask about your symptoms, examine the area, and take X-rays when needed. Once we identify the problem, we explain options for relief and treatment, including fees and any need for a specialist. Treatment or temporary stabilization may be possible that day; some concerns require a follow-up visit.
Tooth pain can have several causes, including decay, a crack, an inflamed or infected nerve, gum disease, or grinding. Depending on the diagnosis, care may involve a filling, crown, drainage, extraction, or root canal referral. Antibiotics are appropriate in some situations, but they do not replace treatment of the underlying dental problem.

Before your appointment
- For a toothache, gently rinse with warm water and keep the area clean. Do not place aspirin on the tooth or gums.
- After an injury, a cold compress against the outside of the face may help with swelling.
- Use over-the-counter pain medicine only if it is safe for you and according to the label or your healthcare professional’s instructions.
