Simple Tooth Extractions and Specialist Referrals
Simple Tooth Extractions in Virginia Beach
Our first goal is to preserve your natural tooth when it can be restored predictably. When a tooth is too damaged, infected, or unstable to save, an extraction may be the healthiest next step.
Reitano Dentistry performs straightforward extractions when appropriate for our office. For impacted teeth, complex procedures, or needs that call for a specialty setting, we coordinate a referral.
When a tooth may need to be removed
- Extensive decay or too little healthy tooth structure to support a restoration
- A deep fracture or split tooth that cannot be repaired predictably
- Infection when the tooth cannot be saved with root canal treatment and restoration
- Advanced gum disease with substantial bone loss and looseness
- Trauma or a problematic tooth affecting another treatment plan
What a simple extraction involves
A simple extraction generally removes a tooth that is visible in the mouth without extensive surgical access. Dr. Reitano reviews your medical history, examines the tooth, and evaluates appropriate X-rays before recommending care.
Local anesthetic numbs the area before the tooth is loosened and removed. You may feel pressure or movement. Tell us immediately if you feel sharp pain so we can reassess your comfort.
When we recommend a specialist
An oral surgeon or another specialist may be the best choice for impacted wisdom teeth, complex roots, teeth close to nerves or the sinus, or procedures that require bone removal or sectioning. Medical conditions, anxiety, and sedation needs may also affect the safest setting for treatment.
Healing after an extraction
We provide written instructions tailored to your procedure. Follow the directions for gauze, medication, food, and cleaning. Protect the blood clot by avoiding smoking, vaping, straws, forceful spitting, and vigorous rinsing during the early healing period as instructed.
Call promptly for severe pain several days after treatment, worsening swelling, fever, or persistent bleeding. Difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling, or uncontrolled bleeding requires emergency medical care.
Planning for the space
Not every extracted tooth needs replacement. When replacement is appropriate, we can discuss an implant, bridge, partial denture, or another option based on your health, goals, and budget.
Frequently asked questions
Do you remove wisdom teeth?
We evaluate wisdom teeth and may remove straightforward teeth when appropriate. Impacted or complex cases are typically referred to an oral surgeon.
Can an infected tooth be extracted?
Often, yes. The timing and setting depend on the infection, medical history, and difficulty of the procedure. An examination and appropriate X-rays guide that decision.
Should I save the tooth or have it removed?
We compare the tooth’s outlook, treatment options, costs, and replacement needs with you before recommending a plan.
